We recently moved our dryer to the garage, stacked on top of a washing machine. The easiest way to ventilate it was to climb about 6 feet into the attic and then turn right into the attic 12 feet down the back of the house. With the vent cover firmly in place, begin connecting the outlet point of the ducting network to the back of the dryer. The dryer's wall vent allows this air to escape through a system of ducts or pipes connected to the back of the dryer.
Once you've determined the shortest route to reach the duct network, find out where the dryer vent will exit. Coming from Minnesota, where almost every house has a dryer in the basement and the ventilation works, it seems perfectly normal to me. If you are going to install a ventilation duct for the dryer through a finished wall, remove a small section and make sure that you are not going to cut any wiring, pipes or ducts. I am thoroughly cleaning the ventilation grille once or twice a year and, if that's what I have to clean, no matter which direction I go, I don't know if I would want to make the effort to redirect it under the house (which wouldn't be so easy)).
